The above are in-game screen shots from the forthcoming Prince of Persia 4/0/Ghosts of the Past, currently in development at Ubisoft Montreal.
The game, scheduled for release in the second half of next year (for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC), will feature younger prince than previous trilogy saw and will serve as a prequel to those titles and the start to a new trilogy (the second title scheduled to come out in summer 2009 to capitalize on the release of The Sands of Time feature film). Stylistically and gameplay-wise, the game has abandoned the dark edginess of the last two titles in favor a fantastical cross between The Sands of Time, Ico and Zelda.
UPDATE #1: Thank you, GameSpot. And these screens are from an early version of the game (this is why they look like crap), not anything final. But what is depicted (the Prince and a mysterious female character working together and being proximate) in the screens should end up in the final game.
UPDATE #2: Hey there, Ubisoft and subsidiaries.
UPDATE #3: I put Prince of Persia 4/0/Ghosts of the Past because I've seen the title referred to as either Prince of Persia 4, Prince of Persia 0/Zero, or Prince of Persia: Ghosts of the Past. However, I have not seen Prince of Persia 4: Ghosts of the Past. I use slashes as stylistic device to refer to alternates without rewriting the same thing multiple times.
UPDATE #4: There is no Wii version of the title in development at this time. There is some alternate PoP title in the works for the system.
UPDATE #5: The second game is looking like it will not coincide with the film. Sorry Wired, I don't really say anywhere that Ghosts of the Past is a definite title and I even note that above. I have replaced blurry versions with non-blurry ones (that will be probably be viewed as uglier) and the screens are from way back in the year 2006.

I was working at Ubisoft Montreal a year ago, and this does indeed look similar to stuff I saw back then. I can't confirm that this is in fact PoP4, but I can confirm that work started on PoP4 over a year ago.
And yes, the white glowy character is female. The Prince (Amir) is the dark figure you can barely see against the background in these shots.
About 18 months ago I saw the internal Ubisoft marketing video for PoP Zero, which is what this looks like to me. The original video was amazing--but totally would not work gameplay wise, or even be renderable ingame, but as far as an artistic piece it was amazing. I couldn't be sure without looking at it again if these are just some of the non-exciting moments from the video or if this is something new.
I don't know what you saw, but what I saw could certainly be rendered on current consoles and certainly worked gameplay-wise because it was footage of gameplay from an early build of a game that will be released for seventh generation consoles, not from some marketing video.
Oh no Surfer Girl! Are you anonymous?! I'm shocked by your sudden change in integrity. I trusted you.
It is a dark day for the world of blogger users...
Buttonbasher: No, I am not anonymous. I want people to know when I am commenting on this blog, I'll go leave you to your own devices to figure out why that is.
Awesome, I really hope Ubisoft goes back to the original style of the Sands of Time. Warrior Within was alright, but lacked that certain charm, the Sands of Time had.
As the story takes place before POP1, does that mean the Prince won't have any sand powers?
I can't wait to hear more about this game. I really loved the last trilogy (particularly 1 and 3). I think this is what Ben Mattes is producing. I read his blog a lot, hoping he'll tip me off. He said his project just hit a big milestone and we should hear about it this winter/spring. Maybe this is it.
ow boy i can't wait.pop is my favorite game of all time i hope ubisoft will do a great job whit this game like in the past.
Thanks for the info.I believe this to be true,as there's logic behind it.I am a die hard fan of POP and all of us fans want POP to go on forever.
wateva it is..a sequel or a prequel...it shud reincarnate the charm of the three sequels..reimbibe the storyline and fascinate the gamers, thats it...!!
but something makes me feel these screenshots are fake..a ps3 inscribed game cannot have such blur grafics...wat say..?
warcry: They are blurred screenshots from an early build that barely looked last-gen, but looked fairly amazing nevertheless.
so as I understude the story line is planed to be different from the ones we saw?(Sands of time; Warrior within; Two Thrones)
if so I hope thgat they will find a way to continue the last "Two Thrones" part. I mean the thing like his sand powers and transformations wich makes the scenarie a litle more interesting and at the same time you get to play with two different characters who have different fight stiles and who (like in Two Thrones) poses theyr own ppersonalities.
Long Long ago there was a video interview bout The 2 Thrones and that guy there said something like : this prob wont be the last game of the Prince of Persia however if theres gonna be a new game bout the prince it would definatly be NOT about the sands of time
So it will not be bout the sands of time
Why do people think that games look amazing even in early alpha-builds? The same happened with the Resistance pictures, now again with these PoP screenies. Placeholder textures people, with no advanced GPU effects applied. When a car enters the production line they don't start by putting in the leather trim and spraying on metallic paint.
Nice scoop Surfer Girl, anyone would think you had connections with Ubisoft. Will this be running on the Scimitar engine, or another Ubi in-house solution?
I heard Ubi is planning to alternate between PoP and AC every year for the course of those trilogies, any truth to this?
Will the DS get any PoP love?
isn't that mainly just Alan Parsons?
I really love Pop the sand of time, i hope that ubi will make a good prequel, but i think it will be.
Except I never said you said it was definite!
Hi SG. Do you suppose any of Techland's 360/PC games will inevitably make its way to the PS3 (Dead Island, Call of Juarez, Warhound)?
Ico was used as a reference for the Sands of Time development though...so how is this different?
anonymous one: Seems kind of likely.
anonymous two: Yes, I believe Ubi Casablanca is working on it.
chris: Not literally, no, but seems that I imply it.
tony: Unlikely.
anonymous three: Zelda influences.
what i think is that this new next gen pop is gonna be based on the AC engine i forgot what the name was but i guess they are gonna do lots of wrok on it so it doesnt look aged and stuff and didnt the ubisoftr eps said that the sot trilogy was officially closed so its not going to be a sequel to that and idk about any prequels relating to the sands of time .....whats if the old prince the one in the jordan mechnar trilogy was the father of the sot prince or somethin like that we can only speculate on this until ubisoft releases some official word or until surfer girl comes up with somethin new on the next gen pop
and this is coming for the pc right??? cause if it aint iam gonna be pissed *hulk smash*
I'm pretty sure Ubisoft Quebec is doing a Wii port of this...
prence of persia's name is amir??

Just a brief comment.
I enjoyed playing POP trilogy.
I can' find the appropriate words to describe the plot...
It's a masterpiece.
Hope that POP4 will have some of POP1 dreamlike atmosphere.
POP trilogy is AWESOME.Best game ever
The Prince of Persia series has been among my favorites of all computer games ever since the original side-scrolling arcade game appeared on Radio Shack computers way back in the 1980s... I absolutely loved The Sands of Time - the design of the castle and surrounding areas was so consistent, I wanted to be able to explore every nook and cranny in greater detail. I enjoyed WW and T2T as well, but they lacked the charm of Sands of Time, and I didn't think the female characters were rendered well in WW. Farah herself was rendered better in Sands of Time, I thought.
I have always thought there was room for a sequel to Sands of Time that dealt in more detail with Farah - what did she do and where did she go when she wasn't with the prince? Couldn't there be a game that followed her through the same game, using her bow and arrow? And in the end, when she finally gets hold of the dagger of time, can we follow her progress up the Tower of Dawn, using the Time features we all love? Or even better, could we perhaps see Farah as she is at the end of T2T, but watch her start to remember the events of the alternate pasts.... I'd like to see more of her adventures!
I just hope that it will not take to much time between the releases os the sequels. I mean, i know it isn't easy to make a game this rad but i simply can´t wait to long for the game to come out. Besides, i heard there'll be the movie for PoP SoT. I just hope they'll do it with the proper respect the game deserves.
Wait, didn't the Prince say that he was also known as Kakolukia or summit like that? As opposed to Amir?
Surfer qirl, please give us more screenshots of Prince of Persia 4. And I hope you tell us the truth, there'll be PoP 4.Why are you so mysterious.
Hi POP Fans:
I truly enjoyed the POPs and got back into PC gaming because of a random TV ad several years back for POP2. TV ads do work! I hope there is a POP4, 5, and 6 for that matter, I'll buy them all. I don't care if they are before or after the current POPs. What I would like to see however is modding ability like TES Oblivion. Wow, think about those possibilities!!
